Shen was a Battle School Student and a member of Ender's Jeesh.[1] He was first introduced in Ender's Game.

When Shen first came to Battle School, Ender Wiggin was in the same launch group as him, and his only friend. He was one of the smaller kids subject to Bernard’s torment. Shen tended to take very large steps, which caused his butt to wiggle, and Bernard was quick to make fun of it, giving him the nickname "Worm". Ender saw how Bernard was attacking Shen, so he hacked the Battle School account system to make a fake account named "God" and then taunted Bernard with it. Shen served as the catalyst to break Bernard’s imposing rule over the launch group, and remained a very important part of Ender’s Battle School experiences.[1]
Later, Shen was one of the students selected to advance to Command School to be a part of Ender's Jeesh. He and the rest of the Jeesh went to Tactical School for a week aboard the Condor and trained. He assisted Ender in his command of the Third Formic War.[1]
