SPOILER WARNING: Ender Quintet plot details follow.

Quincy Morgan was a rear admiral in the International Fleet and the captain of the IFcoltrans1, as well as the main antagonist of Ender in Exile.[1] He was first introduced in Ender in Exile.

History[]

Past[]

Quincy Morgan left Earth in 5 BX, where he left to The Belt and eventually was in charge of a supply operation there.[1]

Ender in Exile[]

Around a year after the end of the Third Formic War, Quincy received an email from the newly promoted Polemarch Jawaharlal Chamrajnagar asking him to be the captain of the colony ship carrying Ender Wiggin to the first colony, while also making sure that he was a complete success in his new assignment as governor. He accepted and Quincy Morgan became the captain of the first colony ship, IFcoltrans1, heading to Shakespeare.[1]

As the IFcoltrans1 departed from Eros, Ender met with Morgan, advising the officer that he would not interfere with any operations on the ship. Ender made the point that he had no authority as governor until he arrived at Shakespeare. This reassured Admiral Morgan, as he had been secretly planning to usurp Ender as governor when the ship reached its destination.[1]

When Morgan heard that Ender was organizing something with a large group, he called him to his office. Morgan believed Ender was plotting mutiny by holding the play reading, which he figured was just a clever cover up. He was more convinced of this when a large message from Earth interfered with the ship's communications. Morgan was resentful that Ender Wiggin had the same rank as him, as Ender was only a teenager, and threatened to put Ender in stasis. The message, it turned out, was actually from Peter Wiggin to Valentine, updating her on Peter's rise to Hegemon of Earth. Valentine arrived and explained the message to Morgan, who then allowed the play to go on, even agreeing to attend.[1]

As the ship arrived at Shakespeare in 41 AX, Morgan worked to prepare for landing and also to marry Dorabella Toscano, as the two had been inseparable during the voyage. Ender Wiggin asked to use the Ansible to discuss the manifest with the Governor, and Morgan begrudgingly accepted. The night before landing, Morgan called Ender to his office, explaining how he planned the landing to go and making attempts to assert his dominance over Ender. The morning of the landing, Ender seemed to be sick in the bathroom, and told Morgan to go on ahead. Morgan went out and met the crowd to no applause, but soon after Ender came out and the crowd cheered for him. Morgan was surprised to see him in full dress uniform when before he was in civilian clothes. Ender handed Morgan a paper and went down to meet the citizens. It was a note from Hyrum Graff and the new Polemarch Bakossi Wuri, warning Morgan not to interfere with Ender's position as both governor and a superior officer or he would face charges of mutiny upon his return to Earth.[1]

Realizing that Ender had won the hearts of the people and because of the letter, Morgan accepted his defeat. He spoke up and stated that he would offload the colonists and supplies and leave the planet to Ender. He began prepping to inform Dorabella and Alessandra that they would not be staying on Shakespeare. Ender then thanked Morgan in front of the crowd for his duty. Going back inside the ship, Morgan went to the bathroom, tore the letter into tiny pieces, chewed them into pulp, and spat the wad into the toilet.[1]

Personality[]

Admiral Quincy Morgan was a proud man with a harsh and demeaning manner. He was resentful of Ender for the fact that Ender technically outranked him despite Ender's age. Ender had risen to the rank through Battle School, which Quincy Morgan saw as being a shortcut to the position, given that Ender had spent much less time than Morgan in the IF. He was unreasonably suspicious of an ansible communication that he wrongly decided was part of a plan to sabotage his ship, and he was accustomed to being in control and became violent when his position was threatened.[1]

Quotes[]

"Admiral Morgan had been in communication with the acting acting governor, Ix Tolo—ridiculous name—because the official acting governor had had the bad manners to take off on a completely meaningless trip right when he was needed for the official public transfer of power. The man probably couldn't stand being displaced from his office. The vanity of some people."
