SPOILER WARNING: Children of the Mind and The Last Shadow plot details follow.

Nest, previously known as Descoladora, was the hypothesized home planet of the Descoladores,[2] but was found to be a planet containing four sentient species that originally came from Earth; the Ravens, the Keas, the human Folk, and the Yachachiyruna.[1]

Description[]

Landscape[]

For the most part, Nest's surface was covered with trees, grasslands, and large ferns.[1]

The meadows of the planet were farms. In swamps rice was grown, and the rice reseeded itself. The wheat and maize did the same.[1]

The beaches of the planet had a bright yellow hue.[1]

History[]

Past[]

In 87 BX when the Formics invaded the Sol System, the Quispe crew of the Ark witnessed the defeat of the onslaught of the Formic Scout Ship, but also saw a larger fleet amassing outside of the system, and decided that they could not help humanity in the Second Formic War. The Mother of the crew assembled the crew in the cargo bay and asked the crew if they would go with her to find another world and save humanity from extinction. The Ark was capable of this voyage, especially after they took possession of a habitat module from an abandoned trading post in The Belt. It was already growing enough food crops to sustain ten times their population, and it had plenty of room for the birds free to soar and fly, to nest and breed.[1]

After around two centuries of voyaging, the Ark arrived on a habitable world, and it was named Nest and settled by the Runa, the Yachachiyruna, the Keas and the Ravens.[1]

In the second century of the colony around 313 AX, some humans were so furious with the mischief of the Keas that they started making traps and caging them where they could do no harm to humans' projects. When the Ravens saw it, they declared a relentless guerrilla war against the village of humans. The humans could do nothing without constant bombardment and tearing. Everything they built the bids broke or weakened, and the birds pecked at their faces, tearing their ears. The birds never blinded any of them, as they wanted it to be a war whose scars might heal. To avoid them, many of the villagers took refuge underground. The Ravens opened the cages and set the Keas free, forging an alliance between the birds. Thus, the Folk of Nest retreated fully underground and decided to live separately from the birds. However, they bore a deep resentment against the birds. Every few centuries, some group of humans would seek to take back the surface, with slogans like, 'We made them smart, now make them obedient."[1]

Children of the Mind[]

In 3180 AX, Jane theorized that the evidence of various Descolada-like viruses in planets had emanated in a cone shape from the homeworld of the species that created it. She took Valentine Wiggin II and Miro Ribeira to many planets that had been devastated by the Descolada on its path that eventually took it to Lusitania. Eventually, they encountered a planet that was a hotspot of technological activity. Jane and the rest of the team assumed that this was the homeworld of the creators of the Descolada.[2]

Some time later, an exploratory team was sent via instantaneous travel to orbit the planet in The Box and learn their language. Eventually, the team was noticed by the inhabitants of the planet and they sent transmissions to their ship, which was an instruction for creating the Descolada virus. After a ship was sent out from the planet to approach the exploratory team, they retreated to Lusitania.[2]

The Last Shadow[]

For several months after the initial discovery, a team was kept in orbit in The Box to study the planet, teleporting around to avoid their ships. The team decided to call the planet Descoladora. They eventually created a map of its surface and collected a large amount of data. In late 3180 AX, Peter Wiggin II and Si Wang-mu became the first of the team studying the planet to land on the surface of Descoladora. They encountered the Ravens and Keas, who gave little information on their origin or if there were still Humans on the planet. Eventually the team encountered the Yachachiyruna, who informed them about how Nest had come to be colonized. Eventually the Lusitanians were invited to meet the Folk, but upon meeting them they were poisoned with a biological weapon, and the humans had to return to Lusitania.[1]

Soon after, the Folk decided to turn against the other species of Nest and retake the planet. They used the same riot control weapon designed by Ruqyaq 20 years ago to kill hundreds of Keas and Ravens, but large portions of them were teleported away by the Lusitanians. However, the Lusitanians vowed to never return, and the Folk likely exterminated the remaining Yachachi, Keas, and Ravens, and retook the surface of Nest.[1]

Trivia[]

  • As the Ark was only capable of traveling at 5% of lightspeed max, and it was stated that they traveled for approximately 200 years, then Nest's solar system must be within 10 lightyears of Earth. This means that Nest is in any of the following systems: Alpha Centauri 3, Proxima Centauri, Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B, Barnard's Star, Luhman 16 a, Luhman 16 b, WISE 0855-0714, Wolf 359, Lalande 21185, Sirius 2, Sirius A, Sirius B, Luyten 726-8 AB, Luyten 726-8 A, UV Ceti, or Ross 154.[3]
