SPOILER WARNING: The Last Shadow plot details follow.

The Leguminids, or Homo leguminensis/Homo sapiens leguminensis, were a sub-species of Humans denoted by the presence of the Anton's Key gene. The first person to be considered a Leguminid is Bean, who is the namesake of the sub-species.[1]

History[]

Creation of Anton's Key[]

A man named Anton created the recipe for Anton's Key, a gene that caused gigantism, extremely high intelligence and a virtually unlimited capacity for learning. Both were caused by a slow, but constant and unstoppable growth from birth of both body and, more remarkably, brain. Children with Anton's Key turned were born prematurely, and, despite low birth weight and shorter gestation period, did not require any extra attention as most premature babies do. All of the normal human growth milestones were accelerated, including, but not limited to, toilet training, walking, and talking. However, they still reached puberty at the normal human age, and had no growth spurts.[2]

As the child grew, the immense size of the body caused circulation difficulties for the heart. The heart would be forced to pump blood through a network of arteries and veins much larger than the average human's network. In the process, the subject would eventually experience congestive heart failure, causing death. As a result, persons in whom Anton's Key has been turned typically did not live past their twentieth birthday.[2]

Anton was placed under a mental ban so that others would be unable to replicate his work; however Volescu got a hold of the information and created Bean. Bean was born in Rotterdam in 6 BX as the result of Volescu' illegal experiment. Volescu stole 23 frozen fertilized eggs from his half-brother Julian Delphiki I, and activated Anton's Key in each of them. When Bean was only about a year old, Volescu evidently learned that a discovery of his illegal experiment was imminent, and killed all of the children except for Bean, who escaped his purge by crawling into a toilet tank and hiding there for several days.[2]

Herotodus[]

After many years, Bean married Petra Arkanian and had many children. Those who had Anton's Key present left Earth with Bean in the relatavistic starship Herodotus to try to wait until a cure for the gigantism was discovered so that they could return to Earth. After 421 years, the crew found a Formic Ark and learned how to modify genomes. Bean was already a giant at this point and could not be saved, but his children Ender Delphiki, Carlotta Delphiki, and Cincinnatus Delphiki all modified their genomes to prevent the gigantism while retaining their superior intellect.[3]

First Generation of Modified Leguminids[]

In 3165 AX, Ender, Carlotta and Cincinnatus landed on the planet Nokonoshima. There, Ender married a woman named Mayumi, Carlotta married a man named Yuuto, and Cincinnatus married a woman named Airi. They remained on the planet for 4 years, as it took awhile for Carlotta to find a spouse. After all 3 Delphikis had children, they took them back aboard the Herodotus and resumed relatavistic travel. These children, the grandchildren of Bean, were the first true Leguminids, as they were born already having the modified genome. While Ender, Carlotta and Cincinatus remained slightly below average human height (due to having grown slower prior to the genetic modification), their children followed the normal human growth pattern while retaining their genius intellect.[1]

Biology[]

The only difference between Leguminids and normal humans (after the modification of the genome) is vastly superior intellect than the average human, from a very early age.[1]
