- "If it came to war, nobody wages more terrible war than the Formics. Except the humans."
- — The Last Shadow, Chapter 19
Humans (Homo sapiens) were a sentient species that originated on Earth. After a brutal century of war with the alien Formics, they left the Sol System and began colonizing other habitable worlds,[1] and made up the vast majority of the population and power within the known galaxy.[2]
Human Sub-Species[]
- Main page: Human Sub-Species
Over the thousands of years since Humans became a space-faring species, a variety of events have caused some groups of humans to diverge from the gene pool and become what can be considered a sub-species.
Godspoken[]
- Main article: Godspoken
The Godspoken were an esteemed social class on the colony world of Path. Godspoken people were able to hear "the voices of the gods", and had to accomplish certain tasks because the gods told them to do so. These various tasks were documented in the Catalogue of Voices of the Gods. In exchange for this forced behavior, they had superhuman intelligence.[3]
Beneath this façade, the Godspoken were actually afflicted with an extreme variant of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), so that they could be controlled by Starways Congress by virtue of their unique intelligence. Starways Congress had genetically engineered the Godspoken with their superior intelligence, but left them with the symptoms of OCD to give them a weakness and therefore make it impossible for them to turn against Congress. Si Wang-mu was a genetic anomaly in the case of the Godspoken OCD. While she possessed the superhuman intelligence that was the hallmark of the Godspoken, she had no urge to cleanse herself and heard no "voices" from the gods.[3]
In 3180 AX, after instantaneous travel to the Outside was accomplished by humans, scientists from the world of Lusitania sent Peter Wiggin II to deliver an anti-virus for the Godspoken's OCD to Han Fei-tzu. He ingested the virus, and began attempting to spread it to other Godspoken by coming into physical contact with them. Eventually, the virus was transmitted around the planet, and the Godspokens' OCD was eradicated after a few days of being terribly sick, but they retained their intelligence.[3]
Leguminids[]
- Main article: Leguminids
The Leguminids, or Homo leguminensis as coined by Ender Delphiki, were a sub-species of Humans denoted by the presence of the Anton's Key gene. The first person who could be considered a Leguminid was Bean, who was the namesake of the sub-species.[2] A man named Anton created the recipe for Anton's Key, a gene that caused gigantism, extremely high intelligence and a virtually unlimited capacity for learning. Both were caused by a slow, but constant and unstoppable growth from birth of both body and brain.[4]
As the child grew, the immense size of the body caused circulation difficulties for the heart. The heart would be forced to pump blood through a network of arteries and veins much larger than the average human's network. In the process, the subject would eventually experience congestive heart failure, causing death. As a result, persons in whom Anton's Key has been turned typically did not live past their twentieth birthday.[4]
In 429 AX, a cure for the gigantism side of Anton's Key was developed, leading to the creation of the Leguminids as a stable sub-species. The only difference between Leguminids and normal humans (after the modification of the genome) was vastly superior intellect than the average human, from a very early age.[5]
Yachachiyruna[]
- Main article: Yachachiyruna
The Yachachiyruna were the most different of the human sub-species from original humans. In 87 BX when the Formics invaded the Sol System, the crew of the Ark decided that they would leave the Sol System to find another world and save humanity from extinction. Within the first ten years of the flight, a certain group of people called themselves the Engineers, because they were the ones who made repairs and invented new machinery on the inside and outside of the ship. They were constantly leaving the parts of the ship that rotated to create gravity, and spent most of their time in weightless space. The engineers saw how dangerous it was to have regular human shape, so they explored ways to modify their genes so that their children would be better suited to the labor. The Engineers joined with the scientists of the crew, and while they could still access communications with Earth, they learned all they could about genes and how to modify them.[2]
When the children of the Engineers were born, they had the modifications to work better with four hands. They looked like humans, except they were covered in hair, hand-like appendages instead of feet, and arms twice as long as their legs. These modified humans were called Yachachiyruna, or individuals a Yachachi, the Quechua word for engineer or technician. After around two centuries of voyaging, the Ark arrived on a habitable world, and it was named Nest and settled by the human Folk, the Yachachiyruna, the Keas and the Ravens.[2]
in 3180 AX when the Lusitanians made contact with the Keas, Ravens, and Yachachiyruna, the Folk invited the Lusitanians to a banquet underground. However, when they arrived, the Folk used a biological weapon and attempted to kill the Lusitanians. When they escaped, they turned against the other species of Nest with an ultrasound weapon. The Lusitanians returned with a Box that could rescue the Ravens, Keas, and Yachachiyruna. The Yachachi were sent to one of the Lusitanian Colonies, where they lived on two different continents, and used boats to pass between them. One of the continents was dominated by the fast-growing human colony and the Formics and Pequeninos who dwelt alongside them.[2]

Pre-Formic Wars Era[]
Many years before 87 BX, humans developed sophisticated spacefaring capabilities and began colonizing the Sol System. Luna and Mars are colonized,[6] and space stations, including one that would eventually become Battle School[7], are constructed at the Lagrange points and in the Asteroid Belt and Kuiper Belt. Mining families took to the stars to mine asteroids and send the resources back for profit.[6]
Formic Wars Era[]
In 87 BX, the Formic Scout Ship entered the Sol System and began raining destruction with its gamma plasma exhaust bursts. By the time the scout ship had reached Earth's orbit, the Formics had destroyed hundreds of civilian mining ships, asteroid colonies, and weigh stations. Upon their arrival, the Formics sent landers full of terraforming crews down to China and killed millions of humans thinking they were simply animals; this became known as the Scouring of China.[8] The First Invasion was devastating and human infrastructure throughout the solar system took massive losses. The total loss of life was over 40 million.[9]
After the end of the First Formic War, the nations of Earth came together to establish a new world order to defend humanity against future attacks from the Formics. Along with the creation of the International Fleet and the offices of Polemarch and Strategos for the military, the Hegemony was formed to govern every country on Earth. Ukko Jukes was chosen as the first Hegemon, as he was a citizen of Luna and had no ties to any Earth nations.[9]
Shortly following the end of the war, Jukes and the rest of the Hegemony conducted extensive research into discovering how the Formics communicated instantaneously over vast distances. Six months after the war, they invented a primitive form of the Ansible, which could send out instantaneous communications. Because it was considered essential that all human activities be centered on the war against the Formics, the Hegemony Council instituted strict population laws, allowing parents to only have two children or face exorbitant fees. A child born to a family with two children was called a Third. Failure to comply with the law resulted in fines or loss of property. However, some nations resisted, mainly in countries with large Catholic or Muslim populations.[9]
The Hegemony and the International Fleet also instituted the use of Common, a language based on American English with minor changes that would serve as the basic language shared between all members of the Fleet.[9]
During the final battle of the Second Invasion in 82 BX, Mazer Rackham managed to destroy the Hive Queen's ship, killing her and ending the war, as the workers no longer had a mind to control them. Fearing that the Formics would return to avenge their dead Queen. immediately following the miraculous defeat of the Formics in the Second Invasion, every available warship was sent out by the International Fleet to attack the Formic's own planets, driving towards their homeworld. The Fleet publicly declared that they had positioned a huge navy of ships beyond the comet shield to guard against a future attack. Due to relativistic effects, many years passed on Earth while the human fleet traveled to the Formic's home planets. Finally, they launched the "Third Invasion" -- an invasion of the Formics by humanity.[1]
Ultimately, under the leadership of Ender Wiggin, the International Fleet defeated the Formic's fleets and arrived at their homeworld. In the final battle, Ender deployed the Molecular Disruption Device against the planet itself, completely destroying it and nearly the entire Formic race in what would later become known as the Xenocide.[1]
Post-Formic Wars Era[]
League War[]
Less than twenty-four hours after the xenocide of the Formics, tensions on Earth began to increase, mainly between the United States of America and the countries of the Second Warsaw Pact. America instigated that the Warsaw Pact was going to attack, while Russia accused the Hegemony of the same thing. Soon after, the war began. The war was fought by various countries in order to seize control of the International Fleet and Ender's Jeesh, but primarily Ender Wiggin himself. America and the Hegemony sought to have him to command their armies, while the Second Warsaw Pact wanted him dead. The war ended when the Second Warsaw Pact agreed to the Locke Proposal after five days of fighting.[1]
Dispersal Project[]
Immediately following the end of the Third Invasion, the surviving foot soldiers on Formic planets began the process of colonization. The remaining International Fleet ships were sent among the planets to augment the colonization efforts with men and supplies. After the Ministry of Colonization was established, they began a formalized process of sending human colony transports to those planets. The first ship sent out, IFcoltrans1, carried Ender Wiggin and his sister Valentine. The ship headed to Shakespeare, where Ender was designated to be governor.[10]
This expansion from the Solar System continued for many years, with planets like Pacifica, Ganges, and Divine Wind being settled.[11] However, some planets refused to receive colonists from Earth, like Colony IX, instead opting to remain entirely independent of their homeworld. The Minister of Colonization, Hyrum Graff, saw the Dispersal Project as successful by around 40 AX.[10]
Wars on Earth[]
Meanwhile, when Ender's Jeesh, returned home to Earth around 1 AX, the rumblings of war soon began. The many countries of the world had been forced into uniting under the Hegemony during the Formic Wars, but now they were over and nearly every country exited from the Hegemony. They were eager to expand their territory and conquer their neighbors. The Wars on Earth began when Russia, under the control of Achilles de Flandres, kidnapped the children who were a part of Ender's Jeesh and brought them to a secret location in Russia. [4]
Peter Wiggin was elected Hegemon following the crisis. Though his power was limited since much of Asia and Europe did not acknowledge his authority, he nonetheless had risen to be the figurehead of the world government. He realized that he needed to get as many Battle School graduates, who were now weapons in a virtual worldwide arms race, off the planet. He traveled around the world to offer a new life in the colony planets to all of Ender's colleagues, but his offer was always rejected.[12]
Undeterred, Peter drafted a constitution that would unite the world in a peaceful society. He invited many Battle School graduates to ratify the document and bring their nations into the ever-growing Hegemony. He was successful in gaining the support of smaller countries such as Rwanda. Soon however, Peter was able to gain a lot of worldwide support for his constitution. Many more nations ratified it, and the Hegemony was reformed into the Free People of Earth. Peter promised to resign from his position as Hegemon, with no successor, once the wars on Earth ended.[13]
Peter called for his military to intervene when China, India, and Russia went to war with each other. China joined the FPE, adding to the government's ever-growing influence around the world. After the wars ended, the large and powerful countries joined the Free People of Earth, encouraging many others to do so. Eventually, every nation on Earth belonged to the FPE except for the United States of America. By around 41 AX, the FPE was simply known as EarthGov and the planet was at peace. The last "wars" were small insurrections that were quickly quashed.[13]
Starways Congress Era[]
At some point between 60 AX and 300 AX, Starways Congress was founded and the Hundred Worlds were organized, but some worlds held out against the federation as Associated Planets.[14] However, by 1042 AX, Congress had united all human worlds under its control.[11] In 1180 AX, Congress established the Starways Code, and changed the calendar to be based around this date as the epoch. In 3010 AX a robotic probe discovered the planet Lusitania, and Congress gave a colonization license to the planet Baía to settle the world. When they arrived in 3066 AX, they discovered the Pequeninos, another sentient species. Congress ordered limited contact with the Pequeninos to prevent cultural contamination. However, the deadly Descolada virus was also discovered on the planet, and strict precautions were put in place to prevent it from spreading to the other worlds. In 3150 AX, after the Lusitanian Rebellion began, Congress ordered the Lusitania Fleet to be sent to the planet to use the Molecular Disruption Device on it and destroy it to prevent the Descolada from destroying the Hundred Worlds.[15] However, by 3180 AX the humans of Lusitania had developed the Recolada which neutralized the deadly effects of the Descolada, and the fleet was called off.[16]
