Hinckley was one of the most well-respected military men the Fleet at the time. He married someone and sired Theresa Wiggin. Later, he retired from the Fleet as an objection to the Hegemony's population laws.
As a way to get back at Hinckley for his criticism of the population laws and his retirement, his daughter's graduate research had its funding pulled. When he heard, Hinckley called his Theresa, but she was angry with him and hung up.
Due to his military obligations, he did not spend much time with his daughter as she grew up, which led to tensions between the two.
